Jason Pierre-Paul didn't play organized football until he was 16 years old. The son of Haitian born immigrants living in South Florida, the athletic Giants defensive star was focused on playing basketball as a teenager.

Then, one day, he was approached by a coach at Deerfield Beach high school. Pierre-Paul was finally convinced to give football a shot, and, as they say, the rest is history.

Pierre-Paul used his freakish talent and huge body to develop quickly while playing for the Bucks. While still a very raw talent, he went on to play two seasons at community colleges. He did enough to impress the coaches at the University of South Florida.

Quick Clicks
Man shot in Haiti thanks rescuers
Bill may ban buying sweets with food...
Cruise ship returns with sick...
Katy Perry gets her flirt on at the NFL...
Soul Train fans bop on Broadway in...
Pierre-Paul landed a football scholarship with the Bulls. After two seasons with USF, he was selected in the 1st round of the 2010 NFL draft by the New York Giants. A pretty remarkable rise that even Pierre-Paul admits was improbable.

"Playing at USF gave me a chance to show NFL scouts what I can do," Pierre-Paul said during Super Bowl media day. "They gave me a chance when nobody else did," he added.

Along the way, his parents and siblings were enjoying the ride from the family's home in Deerfield Beach. They cheered on Pierre-Paul during his amazing 2nd season with the Giants, in which he finished with 16 1/2 sacks and a pro bowl selection.

Now, his family will travel to Indianapolis to watch proudly, as he plays in his first Super Bowl at the age of 23. This includes his father, Jean, who has never seen his son play football. That's because Jean Pierre-Paul is blind. He lost his eyesight when Jason was just 8 months old. He has never attended a game in which his son has played in, but that will change on Sunday.

It's just another unbelievable twist in the story of a young man from South Florida who never dreamed of being an NFL star. But, that's exactly what he's become, and if all goes well, he could also soon be a Super Bowl champion.

Copyright 2012 by Post Newsweek. All rights reserved.
50 money habits everyone should have

I have a lot of bad habits. For example, I tend to bite my nails when I get stressed out. I also have a penchant for opening the cupboard to get a drinking glass -- then walking away and leaving the door wide open. I know. I can't explain it either, but it drives the Honeybee absolutely bonkers every time I do it.

Even so, I like to remind her that I have a lot of good habits too. Perhaps not coincidentally, many of them are related to personal finance.

Hopefully, you have a lot of good personal-finance habits too. How many of these apply to you?
•Taking advantage of your employer's flexible spending account. These accounts not only reduce your tax liability, but they also act as a de facto quasi-savings plan.
•Tracking your income and expenses.
•Being careful not to overspend on gifts.
•Paying attention to mortgage interest rates -- even after you buy a home. People who fail to do this may miss out on refinance opportunities that could save them tens of thousands of dollars over the life of their loan.
•Never buying anything on impulse. One of the best ways to prevent this is to make a shopping list and then stick to it.
•Opening your bills when you get them.
•Paying your bills online when possible.
•Doing your research before purchasing extended warranties.
•Ignoring credit card convenience checks that come in the mail. They usually come with high fees that make them extremely expensive.
•Saving part of your income for retirement. Try saving at least 10% from every paycheck; it's never too late to start.
•Keeping the money in your wallet to a minimum.
•Spending less than you earn every month. File this one under "D" for "Duh!"
•Having an exit strategy when investing. Without one, it is tough to recognize the right time to cut your losses -- or take profits off the table.
•Never assuming past performance guarantees future results.
•Taking advantage of automatic paycheck deductions. Not only does it ensure you pay yourself first, it's an easy and painless way to save for retirement.
•Reading all contracts before signing on the dotted line.
•Planning your dinner menus in advance. We do this at my house because it's an extremely effective way to reduce our monthly food expenses.
•Reviewing your credit card statements for errors and erroneous charges.
•Keeping a budget. Because for most folks, when it comes to managing their money, failing to plan is the same as planning to fail.
•Faithfully following your budget. It's one thing to create a budget, but if you don't have the discipline to put it into action, why bother?
•Increasing your 401k contributions every time you get a raise. (How much money will your 401k provide?)
•Properly maintaining your car. By following your car's maintenance schedule and paying a little up front, you'll reduce the risk of encountering more costly major issues down the road.
•Paying the bills on time. By doing so you'll avoid spending money on needless late fees.
•Taking advantage of coupons and Internet promotional codes as often as possible.
•Refusing to pay the minimum on your credit card bills each month. Here's a credit card fact: Making minimum payments each month will ensure you pay the maximum interest.

•Using your credit card to buy things only if you can pay it off in full at the end of each month.
•Leveraging "good debt" to purchase things that have the possibility of increasing in value or providing a path to a higher income in the future.
•Never hoping for an inheritance to solve your money problems.
•Avoiding the use of payday loans to cover temporary financial shortfalls. Eliminate monthly shortfalls by following a budget and maintaining an emergency fund.
•Not relying on Social Security as your primary source of retirement income.
•Avoiding the lottery. There is a reason why the lottery is known as the "stupid tax."
•Setting, and then regularly reviewing and updating your savings goals.
•Never overpaying for insurance. For example, why pay the higher auto insurance premiums for low deductibles if you rarely make claims?
•Resiting the urge to float checks right before payday. Today, faster bank processing makes this practice much more risky than it used to be.
•Fully understanding stocks and other financial instruments before investing in them.
•Avoiding cigarettes. This expensive habit is one of the "four horsemen of personal finance."
•Avoiding wasted time clipping coupons you'll never use.
•Ignoring the temptation to keep up with the Joneses.
•Buying a new car -- or better yet, a newer used car -- and keeping it for at least 10 years. Buying new cars is costly because they can lose upward of half their value by the time they are three years old.
•Remembering to comparison shop whenever possible.
•Regularly checking your credit report for errors, signs of fraud and identity theft. You're entitled to a free credit report from Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax every 12 months. That means with proper planning you can actually get an update every four months.
•Optimizing your 401k account every year. Diversifying and balancing your allocations will minimize your losses in the event of a major market downturn.
•Negotiating whenever the opportunity presents itself.
•Ensuring your retirement needs are taken care of prior to providing for your children's future. What good is saving for the kids' college education if you'll be eating cat food in your golden years?
•Avoiding frugality as a primary means to achieve prosperity. You can only free up so much money by cutting expenses.
•Occasionally rewarding yourself by splurging.
•Maintaining an emergency fund. Everyone should have between three and six months of living expenses in the bank.
•Resisting the urge to tap your emergency fund for nonemergencies.
•Avoiding interest payments whenever possible.
•Treating your household like a business. By taking an active role in managing your finances -- and looking at ways to maximize your income -- you'll ensure a brighter financial future for you and your family. Who knows: Maybe you'll even stop biting your nails

ORLANDO, Fla. — Casey Anthony was freed from jail early Sunday, and her representatives whisked her away to a mystery destination.

She wore a bright pink Polo v-neck top as she was escorted out of the Orange County Jail shortly after midnight by her attorney Jose Baez and several heavily armed law enforcement officers. Anthony went to a waiting SUV, which whisked her away in a convoy closely followed by media helicopters.

Neither Anthony nor Baez said anything to the hundreds of reporters, spectators and protesters gathered outside. She said thank you to one of the sergeants on her way out, NBC News video journalist Tony Zumbado told msnbc cable television. Zumbado was one of three journalists allowed into the jail to witness the release.

The Orlando Sentinel said some in the crowd shouted: "Killer!"

"It is my hope that Casey Anthony can receive the counseling and treatment she needs to move forward with the rest of her life," Baez said in a statement released to reporters.

Cable television station News 13 tweeted that Anthony was taken to Orlando Executive Airport, where many corporate and private aircraft are based. But the Orlando Sentinel said the SUV went to downtown Orlando and then into the parking garage of her attorney Cheney Mason's office, perhaps to switch vehicles.

Before her release, law enforcement officials put up plastic barricades around the jail's booking and release center, and about seven or eight deputies wearing bullet-proof vests patrolled the area. At least one officer carried an assault weapon. About five officers patrolled the area on horseback.

Advertise | AdChoices

.
As midnight approached, upward of 100 spectators had gathered outside the jail. The crowd included about a half-dozen, sign-carrying protesters who had gathered there, despite a thunderstorm that dumped heavy rain over Orlando.

"This release had an unusual amount of security so, therefore, in that sense, it would not be a normal release," said Orange County Jail spokesman Allen Moore. "We have made every effort to not provide any special treatment for her. She's been treated like every other inmate.

Moore said there were no known threats received at the jail. Officials had a number of contingency plans in place, including plans in case shots were fired as she was released.

The 25-year-old Anthony was found not guilty July 5 of killing her 2-year-old daughter Caylee in June 2008. But she was convicted of lying to detectives about the girl's whereabouts. When Caylee's disappearance was reported in July 2008, Anthony told detectives several lies, including that she had been kidnapped by a nonexistent nanny.

Only on msnbc.com

The barbell is up, and the dress code changed .
Obama’s budget plan is 'unicorn,' Norquist says

Joining Forces with Jill Biden for military families .

Going viral: The best and worst social network sites .
Statehood questioned, so ND to vote on fix
US intel agencies get better at classifying cyber-attacks
First Read: What Americans support (and don't support) in cutting the deficit
.
.
With credit for the nearly three years she's spent in jail since August 2008 and good behavior, she had only days remaining when she was sentenced July 7 to four years.

Caylee's remains were found that December in woods near the home Casey Anthony shared with her parents. Her attorneys say that Caylee drowned in the family pool.

Prosecutors alleged that Anthony suffocated her daughter with duct tape because motherhood interfered with her lust for a carefree life of partying with friends and spending time with her boyfriend. However, some jurors have told various media outlets that the state didn't prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt as required for a conviction — although most have added that they don't think Casey Anthony is innocent.

Defense attorneys and sheriff's officials have not said where Anthony is heading.

"She is safer in jail than she is out here," said Mike Quiroz, who drove from Miami to spend his 22nd birthday outside the jail. "She better watch her butt. She is known all over the world."

Lamar Jordan said he felt a pit in his stomach when he saw Anthony walking out of jail.

"The fact that she is being let out, the fact that it is her child and she didn't say what happened, made me sick," Jordan said.

Joe Raedle / Getty Images
David Antolic from Orlando offer support for Casey Anthony outside the Orange County Jail on Saturday.

Earlier, Frank Klimek, wife Elaina and sons Michael, 14, and Christopher, 7, held signs proclaiming that Anthony would some day be judged by a higher power, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Advertise | AdChoices

.
But Klimek carried a sign urging people not to "do anything stupid."

One supporter of Anthony, David Antolic of Orlando, was in the minority outside the jail but told the Sentinel that he thought the news media had been unfair to her.

"She was given her due process," Antolic told the Sentinel. "She was tried. People need to respect that due process."

The vitriol directed at Anthony has been pointed: After the verdict, anger spilled onto social networks like Facebook and Twitter from people who had spent weeks watching the trial on local and cable television networks. On Friday, Anthony's legal team said it had received an emailed death threat with a manipulated photo showing the 25-year-old woman with a bullet hole in her forehead. It has been forwarded to authorities.

In Orlando and elsewhere, many remain convinced Anthony isn't totally innocent. David Waechter recorded the trial and watched it at home with his wife every day after work. He said Anthony was guilty of "something, for sure."

"I'm perplexed. You know there is something there, but you don't know what," he said. "Yet she is getting

Advertising Salespeople Could Become Extinct
I read a post this morning by Daniel Ambrose, an editor for Online Pubishing Insider where he speculates that the success of Google’s and similar sites ability to create 90% of their revenue without salespeople. I have wondered about this also. I fundamentally agree with his premise, which is that even though the industry is changing, there will always be a need for salespeople. He states…
“Even more convincing should be the example of the financial services business. Financial products are the ultimate commodity. Mutual funds are merely bunches of stocks or other financial products that are priced daily, hourly or even by the second on exchanges around the world. Stocks and mutual funds and other financial services, from the “boring” life insurance, to the notorious Collateralized Debt Obligations and the many other so-called-sophisticated financial instruments (still all made up of financial products that can be counted and measured), are sold by the highest-paid salespeople in the country.
What do media advertising and financial services have in common? In both cases they have a clear and quantifiable history that can be viewed and analyzed for what worked. For both, past performance is no guarantee of future performance. Yes, that is the problem. The market keeps changing, customer behavior keeps changing, and advertisers are always trying to understand and anticipate that change. So salespeople who bring a sophisticated understanding of their customer’s business and their customer’s needs, are valuable. And they will be valuable as long as change keeps happening – likely to be true for a very long time.” Quoted from Are Ad Salespeople Doomed?
The problem is that so many salespeople don’t get it yet. They are not striving to become one of the elite that will survive. It is certainly a business of “Survival of the fittest”.

Six Signs He's Thinking of Splitting Up

Guys aren't known for initiating relationship conversations — which is why when they do break things off, it often seems like the bomb was dropped out...

Guys aren't known for initiating relationship conversations — which is why when they do break things off, it often seems like the bomb was dropped out of the blue. But experts say men actually do give away certain clues when they're not feeling it anymore. Pay attention:
1. He overloads at work. When a relationship seems to be heading south, guys often tend to take on more on the job to compensate; it gives his ego a boost since he's likely upset that things with you are floundering. Plus, if he needs space, work is the one place you're practially guaranteed not to be.
2. He stops inviting you to hang with his friends. When you first became a twosome, he wanted his bros to meet you (and be jealous that he scored such a hottie). But if he's thinking you and he aren't meant to be, he'll start having more boys' nights sans you so his pals know that you're on the outs and will support him when the breakup backlash hits.
3. He keeps convos neutral. Notice you're discussing things like the news and the weather a lot more lately? These topics aren't intimate, and they're a sign he may be distancing himself to have less of a bond with you, so his feelings aren't murky when he does the deed and it'll make for a cleaner break for him.
4. He boxes you out. Say you're watching a movie together on the couch and his body is angled away from you — he's sending you the message that he doesn't feel intimate. At all. A guy who's super into you will want to touch and engage you when you're hanging out. If he's not? His body language essentially takes over, blocking you out to convey that he's feeling miles apart.
5. He stops texting you the stupid little stuff. Guys usually text on a gut impulse — whatever they feel, when they feel it. When that stops, it means he doesn't really feel the need to send you the nice little check-ins he once did just to say good-night or to let you know he's thinking of you.

6. Cuts off the PDA. When he kisses you or holds your hand in public, he's telling the world that you're together — which he won't want to do if he anticipates being single soon. Whether he'd act on it or not, he's subconsciously demonstrating to any potential future interests in the area that you two are on shaky ground.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Before a Koran was burned at his modest church here on March 20, the pastor Terry Jones held a self-styled mock trial of the holy book in which he presided from the pulpit as judge. The prosecutor was a Christian who had converted from Islam. An imam from Dallas defended the Koran .
Sitting in judgment was a jury of 12 members of Mr. Jones’s church, the Dove World Outreach Center . After listening to arguments from both sides, the jury pronounced the Koran guilty of five “crimes against humanity,” including the promotion of terrorist acts and “the death, rape and torture of people worldwide whose only crime is not being of the Islamic faith.”
Story: UN staff killed in Afghan protest over Quran burning in US
Punishment was determined by the results of an online poll. Besides burning, the options included shredding, drowning and facing a firing squad. Mr. Jones, a nondenominational evangelical pastor, said voters had chosen to set fire to the book, according to a video of the proceedings.
Mr. Jones said in an interview with Agence France-Presse on Friday that he was “devastated” by the killings of 12 people in a violent protest in Afghanistan when a mob, enraged by the burning of a Koran by Mr. Jones’s church, attacked the United Nations compound in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif. “We don’t feel responsible for that,” he told the news service.
Unlike the worldwide outcry that greeted the pastor’s plan to burn 200 copies of the Koran on Sept. 11 — which he ultimately abandoned — the event last week at the 50-member church was largely ignored by the news media. As of 2 p.m. on Friday, the video of the Koran’s burning on the church Web site had been viewed only 1,500 times.
'Horrible tragedy'
“The local strategy of everybody was to ignore this,” said the Rev. Lawrence D. Reimer, pastor of the United Church of Gainesville. “It’s just a horrible tragedy that this act triggered the deaths of more innocent people.”
Some church members were surprised by the violent reaction in Afghanistan on Friday, said Fran Ingram, an assistant at the church. She explained that it was decided in the weeks leading up to the burning that a jury of churchgoers and volunteers would hear both sides before deciding what to do.

ORLANDO, Fla. — The killer whale that drowned a trainer at Orlando's SeaWorld facility last year is slated to perform for the first time since the death.

SeaWorld officials said Tilikum would participate in the park's "Believe" show beginning Wednesday morning.

Tilikum drowned 40-year-old Dawn Brancheau on Feb. 24, 2010, and has not participated in a show since then, while park officials are spending millions making safety upgrades.

Plans to get trainers back in the water with the whales progressed earlier this month despite findings last summer by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration that accused SeaWorld of recklessly putting trainers in danger.
